Doge Charity Miner is a project that I started and finished in the fall of 2014. The project is more of a proof of concept than a mass moneymaker. The end result is the website I created: dogecharityminer.net. The website uses actionscript that mines for cryptocurrency (dogecoin) through a user's browser. Because of this, by simply opening a webpage, people can mine for currency that can be used to fund charities. As an extra incentive to keep the window open, I put in a small webgame (which is very similar to Cookie Clicker) that gives the user more points based on how long its open. Overall, although the project doesn't make much money, the concept behind it is extremely interesting; on the surface, this seems like an easy way to get into cryptocurrency mining, but at the same time, it can open doors for companies to put it on their website to make money off of unknowing users. With the ebola outbreak, this is more important than ever. By keeping the mining webpage open on your browser, you can help pay for their operations.
Dogecoin
How does it work? The webpage uses your computer to mine for 'money' called dogecoin. Dogecoin is a cryptocurrency that can be easily exchanged for USD. The more computers that open this webpage, the more dogecoin can be mined. However, in order for the computer to mine, the mining webpage must be opened.
Hashes
When you start mining, you will see a your kilohashes/second. This number is the speed at which your computer is producing coins; the higher the value, the more dogecoins generated. There is a dropdown menu that controls the amount of your CPU that is being used for charity. We recommend that when you are not using the computer, the menu should be set to a higher level. While you use the computer, however, if you notice a drop in your computer's speed, you should lower that level. This way, we can maximize the amount of money produced. Even if it seems as though your computer is not contributing much, but every computer counts.
Spreading the Word
This donation fund won't work without more visitors! Many computers are required to generate a usable amount of money. Please invite friends, family, co-workers, and others to help raise funds. This is the most important part of the website; without enough visitors, it will fail. We encourage you to spread the word using social media such as facebook and twitter. Click Doge is a game produced by Rick N. Although this does not actually contribute to the amount of doge mined, it gives an extra incentive and reminder to keep the tab open. The longer the tab is open, the more you can advance in the game and the more dogecoin you generate. Another large part of this is to remind you to always have the tab open to maximize dogecoin made! There may be an issue with saving on Internet Explorer and Safari, so I recommend using the import and export save options.
